Google, about a year ago, has overhauled the Google Local Business Center and renamed it Google Places where part of that was introducing Google “Tags”.
As Google’s new and simple way to advertise, businesses in select cities can make their listings stand out on Google.com and Google Maps with Tags for just $25 per month.
As of today, Google has been rolling out Tags to three new cities namely Austin, Atlanta, and Washington, D.C. as well as to the ongoing availability in Houston and San Jose, CA.
In the coming weeks after the Tags trial was introduced, Google has also been introducing Tags in Chicago, San Diego, Seattle, Boulder, and San Francisco.
Last September, Google has reported that it was aggressively pushing tags as a Google ad option. However in October, Google has pulled the ability for the website URL tag option, which made it a lot less useful. Then last week, Google announced the end of tags.
Google explained that ‘they have made a decision to shift their efforts toward other present and future product offerings for local businesses, and thus they decided that they will be discontinuing the Tags trial; thus, ending the Tags Ads in Google Maps.”
With this new decision, Google has now stopped receiving new signups and they will continue to be working with existing participating businesses over the coming weeks in order to help them meet their marketing needs with other Google products where possible.
Google further explained that they have learned a lot of things from their Tags trial and will take that gained knowledge into account as they continue to find the best ways to serve users and local businesses alike.
Google has thanked all of the businesses that were part of their Tags trial, and they are hoping that they can meet their advertising needs with one of their other existing products.
