August 29, 2012 – Google has confirmed the chatter on a possible Google update that had been taking rounds among webmasters, saying that it had rolled out a minor Panda refresh this past Monday, August 20th.
Called the Google Panda Version 3.9.1 Update, Google had said via a Twitter post in its account that this latest update to its Panda algorithm had only minimal impact on search results, with less than 1% of search queries impacted.
As posted via a tweet, “Panda data refresh this past Monday. ~1% of queries noticeably affected. More context: goo.gl/wQRZ0 23 August 2012.”
So, this latest Google Panda Version 3.9.1 Update is the first Panda update from the search engine giant this month, after previous Panda 3.9 struck in late July, specifically on July 24th, just about a month ago.
Since it first went live in February 24, 2011, this latest of Google’s series of Panda Ranking algorithm Updates, which was designed to remove low-quality/thin content from Google’s search results and reward “high-quality” websites, is the 20th in the series.
These algorithm refreshes had since been routinely rolled out by Google, with the amount of time between each Panda Update varying, sometimes happening within days and other times with several weeks between updates.
Google had said that these Panda updates is expected to be smoother and more consistent going forward, unlike the Penguin update, which is said to be more jarring and jolting.
At the SES San Francisco conference during the head of Google’s spam fighting team Matt Cutts keynote, Cutts had said that with the Penguin algorithm being newer, it still needs bigger adjustments in order to improve the algorithm and thus it is expected to have a more “jolting” impact on sites it hits, until it smoothens out over time in similar way to Panda.
