July 03, 2012 - Google has just recently posted a new video called “SEO for startups in under 10 minutes”, which provides startups tips and suggestions about how to master search engine optimization in just 10 minutes.
This 10-minute video about SEO essentials is intended for those search engine optimization experts or webmasters who work on a company site with under 50(ish) pages, those aiming to rank well for their company name and a handful of related search terms, and those who want to be smart about SEs and attracting targeted visitors, but haven’t kept up with the latest trend in SEO.
Providing advice from how to add the best keywords and including analytics code on your site to the best ways to approach marketing in general, Google’s aim for the video is to make it easier for startup businesses to get their brands ranked higher on SERPs.
Maile Ohye, Developer Programs Tech Lead on Google’s Webmaster Central Team, said in the video, “It’s great to have a fancy site, but try not to focus so much on site fanciness that you don’t actually have indexable and searchable text.”
“You want to use relevant keywords naturally in your text. These keywords are like query terms that normal people would use to find your product or your business.”
In addition, Ohye recommends that in each page of your site, make sure that there should be a unique topic, title and meta description for the snippet that appears below the link listed on the Google search results page. But, meta keyword tags aren’t needed as Google Search ignores it. Put your keywords in the file name and typed with lower case letters.
Whether you are linking to your site or another, you must make sure that the anchor text that you’re using for every link should be clear and include keywords. This means that “click here” should not be used as it is not a descriptive enough phrase to highlight with a link. Instead, use “product specifications” or something that better describes the link with the content.
Ohye also gives advice on what things to avoid, saying, “Do not hire any rogue or shady SEO [provider] — if they guarantee rankings, it’s too good to be true,” she says. “Don’t participate in link schemes or buying links for the purpose of passing PageRank.”
The question of whether startups should invest time and resources into social media marketing was also addressed in this 10-Minute SEO Essentials Video.
Ohye said to play to their authentic strengths, adding, “It’s likely that your company has limited resources so if your CEO likes to tweet, go ahead and let them. If you have a salesperson who really enjoys Facebook, that’s terrific… and let them interact with the community there.”
