The increasing of spam content on the internet has pushed Google to take action by adjusting its algorithm to weed out irrelevant and unimportant sites from popping while leaving only the more useful content. However, this action did not appear to have been completely effective. Instead, the reverse happened. In the process, what were weeded out were some of more useful ones while those unimportant ones were greatly and adversely affected.
The Associated Content and Mahalo were downgraded despite having little good information based from the analysis done by Sistrix, an Independent SEO Software Firm.
As an action to this, Google says that it will help those good sites that were adversely affected by the action. Demand Media that deals with hundreds of web pages everyday was barely affected. On the other hand, the Cult of Mac also lost almost all of its content on Google which marked a great traffic change on its site.
According to Kahney of the Cult of Mac, the downgrade his site experienced was due to the fact that there had been reposts of his content though he did not bother to put a stop to this. As a result of this adjustment of algorithm, the Cult of Mac has lost 96 per cent of its Google spot.
Other victims of this farmer update are the companies of Willy Franzen, onedayonejob.com and onedayoneinternship.com. He is now puzzled why Google hates one of his two sites.
“The jobs site got hit hard, and the internships site is untouched,” said Franzen. He adds that the program is inconsistent and that it has caused much problems on his sites.
Google Fellow Amit Singhal said “no algorithm is 100% accurate.” He admits that the algorithm change might not have been perfect and they are aware of some fallout.
He added, “We deeply care about the people who are generating high-quality content sites, which are the key to a healthy web ecosystem. However, we don’t manually change anything along these lines.”
Currently, Google’s engineers are already working on building a new layer on top of this farmer algorithm to make its search results even more accurate than it is.
