January 26, 2012 – Google has launched “Page Layout Algorithm”, an algorithmic change that will evaluate the page layout of the site and the amount of content users see on the page once they click and view on a result.
The change was motivated by complaints from unhappy users who have clicked on site pages only to scroll through advertisement space to find the actual information. In its effort to deliver the “best possible user experiences” and deliver more high-quality websites in search results as user experience is of high importance to Google.
Now, as Google wants to see that whenever a user enters a certain site, the user will see the article or content immediately and not the different ads that a site owner usually has, Google will now do a reordering of results on the search page and publishers with more ad space than quality content above the fold could expect lower rankings in the coming weeks.
Though this algorithmic ranking change will effect “less than 1% of searches globally”, websites saturated with advertisements will now need to have new strategies for maintaining revenue while presenting the best possible front page for users and Google search rankings. These websites will now need to update their page layout. Google has assured that once a site’s page layout is updated, their page layout algorithm will automatically reflect the changes as they re-crawl and process enough pages from the site to evaluate the changes.
Google has recommend website owners and Search Engine Optimization Experts to use their Browser Size tools to see how their website would look under different screen resolutions. Here are also some tools that you could use to see how your website looks under different screen resolutions:
- Window Resizer from ionut-botizan.net – resize browser window to emulate various screen resolutions
