January 17, 2012 – Just last week Thursday, Google posted in its official Webmaster central blog post an article entitled “Better page titles in search results” that explains why Google may pick a different title tag.
One should take note that Google’s generation of page titles and descriptions or “snippets” is completely automated and uses the parameters of both the content of a page as well as references to it that appear on the web. The snippet and title are intended to best represent and describe each result and explain how it relates to the user’s query.
Alternative Title Pages
Posted by Pierre Far, a Webmaster Trends Analyst, the blog post stated that primarily, Google still considers the tag as a primary source for titles. That’s why Google’s advice of making the title tag concise and useful as well as attractive is still very much applicable.
However, in instances where there are some pages where a single title might not be the best one to show for all queries, Google has made its algorithms to generate alternative titles. This is done in order that a website’s page will no longer be constrained with having just the one title for all the different queries the page ranks for, making the result look more relevant to Google’s searchers, helping them to easily find what they look for , as well as to have a better click through rate, helping both Search Engine Optimization experts and web owners as there will be more traffic for them.
So now, webmasters and SEOs are advised to make use of high-quality titles on their web pages more so now than ever.
Here are a Few Tips for Creating Descriptive Page Titles and Good Meta Descriptions:
- Make sure that every page on your site contains a title specified in the tag. These page titles should be descriptive and concise and not long or wordy.
- Avoid using vague descriptors like “Home” for your home page, or “Profile” for a specific person’s profile.
- Avoid keyword stuffing. Avoid using the same words or phrases multiple times.
- Do not use repeated or boilerplate titles. Instead, use distinct, descriptive titles for each page on your site. Also, avoid using long titles that vary by only a single piece of information.
- Make sure that every page on your site has a meta description that accurately describes the particular page.
- Meta descriptions should be different for every different page. Identical or similar descriptions on every page of a site aren’t helpful when individual pages appear in the web results. Make use of site-level descriptions on the main home page or other aggregation pages, and use page-level descriptions everywhere else.
- Make sure to include clearly tagged facts in the description.
