January 10, 2012 – Search engine giant, Google, has recently released an update with the 30 or so most recent search quality updates.
Among the several new Google’s search updates is a project called “Megasitelinks” as well as its detection of “byline dates” on web documents and improvements to its image search tool and many, many more.
More Relevant Sitelinks with Megasitelinks
Named with a launch codename “concepts” and a project codename “Megasitelinks”, it is an algorithmic improvement algorithm for picking sitelinks. Though Google is vague about why the name “Megasitelinks” was chosen for this update, this update has one interesting feature, the localized sitelinks. The result is there are now more relevant sitelinks as Google may now show sitelinks specific to your metropolitan region which you can control with your location setting.
Image Search Improvements (New Ranking Algorithms)
- Image Search landing page quality signals. Launch codename “simple”, this enhancement analyzes various landing page signals for Image Search, making landing page quality an algorithmic signal for image search. Google stated that they not only want to ensure that they are not only showing the most relevant images but they want also to ensure that they are also linking to the highest quality source pages.
- Better spam detection in Image Search. This algo update makes an improvement on Google’s spam detection in Image Search by extending algorithms they already using for their main search results.
- More Accurate Byline Dates
Google is now starting to show more accurate byline dates. Google had made a few improvements on how they determine what date to associate with a web document, resulting to users viewing more accurate dates annotating search results.

Soft 404 Detection
This update is an improvement to how Google detects soft 404s, especially in Russian, German, and Spanish. For all you webmasters out there, the best practice is still to always use the correct response code.
Safer Searching
Google has updated its SafeSearch tool. This was done to provide better filtering for certain queries when strict SafeSearch is enabled.
