The days when we can talk to our computers are fast becoming a reality, as Google quite recently rolled out its latest feature for Google Chrome browser users.
The latest Google update now allows Google Chrome browser users to use voice on Google Maps to initiate location searches and get directions.
Google Voice Search History
Google Voice Search was once a tool from Google Labs that only allowed someone to use their phone to make Google queries.
In the summer of 2008, Google added voice search to the BlackBerry Pearl version of Google Maps for mobile that would allow Pearl users to say their searches in addition to typing them. Then in November 2008, Google had added voice search to Google Mobile App on iPhone and then a little later, Google announced Voice Search for iPod touch.
On August 5, 2009, T-Mobile launched the MyTouch 3G with Google, which features one-touch Google Voice Search.
Then since March 2010, Google rolled out a beta-grade derivation of Google Voice Search that was used on YouTube, providing optional automatic text caption annotations of videos in the case that annotations are not provided. This feature is intended to be used by the hearing-impaired and, at present, is only available for use by English-speaking users.
Then last summer, Google rolled out once again voice actions for Android 2.2 running phones.
Google Voice Search on Chrome
Now, this end of August 2011, Google has put the same voice search capability for Google Maps on Google Chrome browser for the PC, offering Chrome users a faster way to get direction.
To use the feature:
- Google Chrome users need a microphone, then on the left of the search button look for the search text box; there you can see a microphone icon, click this.
- Once clicked, you may now say what you’re searching for and Google’s voice recognition software does the rest.
