October 27, 2010 - Developer Brian Kennish has devised an application for Facebook which works on blocking information to and from third-party advertisers.
Kennish is a developer for Google and has worked on numerous projects. Recently, he has developed a program to contradict Facebook Connect’s ability to track users when they browse registered sites on the web. It also works on stifling the “Connect via Facebook” sidebar.
Working with the Chrome team, his application serves as an extension for the Google browser. It was then necessary for him to clarify on his download site that his development of the utility has no connection or anything with any Google initiative.
He had been avoiding publicity since the launch of Disconnect and his only response to questions were posted on his Twitter which states, “Thanks, but I wouldn’t be a very good interview right now. Here’s an algorithm to simulate: No comment”.
However, on his blog he posted that he will be talking more about his making of the application and respond to Facebook Disconnect extension soon.
He stated that Facebook Connect had a record of leaking personally identifiable information and Facebook Disconnect is to work on blocking this trffic from the third-party sites to Facebook servers. He said that there is a possibility that the program might annoy Facebook due to the fact that despite of suffering from flat revenues, Facebook has continued to sought ways to increase their income by allowing paid access to its APIs (application programming interfaces).
Facebook has enabled its users to share their information with third-party websites and applications in 2006. The following year, Facebook Platform allowed third-party developers to build social applications on the site and gather user data. 2008 was the inception of Facebook Connect which allow users to connect their Facebook identity, friends, and privacy to any site and have these sites reporting back when the users have visited their sites.
