Social networking sites such as Facebook are so deeply ingrained as many people state that their friendships now depend on them, this according to an Australian study.
There are still some who choose to opt out, making up the three percent that were found as a result of a poll which states that the said percentage are those people who are between 18 to 30 years old who don’t have a Facebook profile or the equivalent.
Those who are aged 80 years old who stated that they have shunned all forms of online social networking make up the less than 15 percent of the respondent of the said poll who expressed belonging to the said category.
A researcher from the Australian Psychological Society, Dr. Rebecca Mathews stated that these online social networking sites are really ingrained in the society now. She added that they have set a major change in the way of communication of people nowadays which can be compared to the invention of the telephone.
A total of 1800 people were polled by Dr. Mathews which indicated that 86 per cent of these people were using online social networking with the vast majority into Facebook, Twitter, and RSVP. Many people have also indicated that these networks are now part of their everyday routine.
53 percent of the respondents such as Search Engine Optimization Experts stated that the websites were able to give them more regular contact with their friends and family, whereas 79 percent stated that they cultivated closer ties with those who are living far away. 26 per cent of the respondents indicated that they were able to go out a lot and had more face-to-face contact with the people that they have met through the online social networking.
On the other hand, 52 per cent of the total respondents aged between 18 to 30 stated that they might lose their contact with many of their friends if they stop using these networks which then led to the question of what might possibly happen should Facebook get switched off.
